In addition to the training in their craft that Ohio State students in the arts receive, the university has partnered with community arts organizations to provide students with practical, real-world experience, while also enabling those organizations to build capacity or launch new initiatives.
Art students flourish through Ohio State externship program
More than 100 undergraduate students at The Ohio State University have worked as “externs” with area arts organizations since 2023, when the university received $2 million from the Mellon Foundation to support student experiential learning and community engagement through the arts.

Graduate Students Pilot Mellon-funded Summer Internship Program
Funded through a three-year, $2 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, the internships have enabled the students to gain valuable professional experience, while also permitting the local organizations to expand their capacity.
