Hale Black Cultural Center

About

The Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center (HBCC) was established on October 11, 1989, by The Ohio State University President Edward Jennings. Its mission is to honor and uphold the legacy of Dr. Frank W. Hale Jr. (1927-2011), who was a visionary educator and leader, civil rights advocate and tireless champion for students at Ohio State. Dr. Hale served the university as associate dean of the Graduate School, vice provost for the Office of Minority Affairs, and special assistant to the president, dedicating his career to expanding access and support for students, including those who were the first in their families to go to college.

The HBCC is a vibrant, multi-use space dedicated to fostering academic excellence, cultural enrichment and community engagement. Its facilities include computer-equipped classrooms, meeting rooms, a recently renovated student lounge and the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium, which together support a broad spectrum of academic, social and community activities. The center is also home to one of the largest collections of African American and African art in the United States, featuring works by nationally acclaimed and local artists that reflect and celebrate the richness of the Black experience. Dr. Hale passionately believed that students should by surrounded by works of art and that their academic experience would be enriched by its presence. Ohio State is both committed to preserving and growing the collection and grateful to the many artists who have given work to it over the years.

Throughout the week, the Hale Center serves as a vital hub for students, faculty, staff and community members. Student organizations hold meetings and events during evenings and weekends; university departments utilize the space for classes, lectures and programming; and faculty regularly teach courses within the building. Signature events such as our Juneteenth celebration and rotating art exhibitions draw attendees from across the university and the broader Columbus community. Through these activities, the HBCC continues to promote understanding, connection, and appreciation of Black culture and history — remaining an essential resource for education, student success and community-building. Along with our colleagues from the Office of Undergraduate Education with whom we share Hale Hall, the Hale Center welcomes all Ohio State students and is committed to their academic success and well-being.
