Born in Martinique in the French West Indies, Euzhan Palcy is a celebrated film director, writer and producer. In 1983, she directed Sugar Cane Alley, which went on to win the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival and the prestigious Cesar Award in France for best first film. Other notable works include A Dry White Season (1989), starring Donald Sutherland, Susan Sarandon and Marlon Brando, the documentary Aimé Césaire: A Voice for History (1994), and The Killing Yard (2001). In 2022, she received an honorary Oscar from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her life’s work.
