John Canemaker is one of the leading figures in American animation both as a historian and a filmmaker. This program features three examples of his stunning hand-drawn animation that has delighted fans all over the world. The John Lennon Sketchbook (1986) is a delightful short inspired by the drawings of the legendary musician and produced by Yoko Ono. The Academy Award–winning The Moon and the Son (2005) is an autobiographical tale in the form of an imagined conversation between Canemaker and his volatile father. Supported by a 2016–17 Wexner Center Artist Residency Award in Film, Hands (2019) is Canemaker’s moving adaptation of one of the stories from Sherwood Anderson’s book Winesburg, Ohio (1919). (program approx. 50 mins., digital video and DCP)
