Faculty: Jiung Yoon, piano

For centuries, composers focused on listeners' memories and anticipations. Minimalist music instead involves as Philip Glass put it — "generating the present at each moment."

Timashev Recital Hall

To demonstrate the presentness of the past, Jiung Yoon has crafted seven pairings of old and new: uncanny musical couplings that show how "autonomous sounds" (Wim Mertens) and "liberating and impersonal rituals" (Steve Reich) have a longer history than one might expect. The question becomes: which seems more minimal, the old or the new?
