On a beautiful May morning in Glasgow in 2021—the first day of Eid—UK immigration officers removed two Sikh men from their home and detained them in a van. A quick-thinking man slides under the van, preventing it from leaving. Word of the raid goes out, and students, neighbors, members of the local mosque, and countless others rush to the area in response. Thousands of hours of footage were taken during the eight-hour standoff, resulting in this riveting film’s ability to move between a vast number of perspectives to tell the story of this remarkable day. We hear from all the key players, but among the film’s most effective gambits is to selectively use performers (the superb Emma Thompson and Kate Dickie) to reenact the testimonies of the man under the van and the nurse who attended to him in order to protect their identities. The film captures the event’s chaos and confusion but also a sense of joy, celebration, and the power of community. Winner of a Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. (99 mins., DCP)
