CODE: Blossoming

The Columbus Ohio Discovery Ensemble presents "Blossoming" - a free concert of contemporary music including the world premiere of blossoming and resonant hues . . . suspended in the surrounding brightness” by award winning Ohio composer, Jeffrey Mumford and acclaimed soloist, Julia Yang.

Guggenheim fellowship winning composer Jeffrey Mumford's music is described by The New York Times as "...a philosophy of music making that embraces both raw passion and a gentle imagistic poetry.” Mumford’s new work, “blossoming and resonant hues . . . suspended in the surrounding brightness” is a stunning chamber cello concerto written in memoriam of abstract painter, sculptor and arts educator Sam Gilliam. The concert will also feature an evocative graphic-score structured improvisation by composer Brittany J. Green, a compelling electro-acoustic work by composer Angélica Negrón that explores belonging and identity, and a lush work by composer Christopher Chandler inspired by the beauty of Shenandoah National Park. This concert is sponsored by the Johnstone Fund for New Music and The Ohio State University Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts.

The Columbus Ohio Discovery Ensemble (CODE) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit contemporary music ensemble founded by Artistic Director Michael Rene Torres that is dedicated to the promotion, performance, and perception of contemporary concert music in the Central Ohio community. CODE's major focus has been on local creativity while extensively collaborating with Ohio composers, Ohio performing artists, and Ohio arts organizations. Since CODE’s first performance in May of 2015, the ensemble has performed all over the greater Columbus area, premiering new works by living composers, collaborating with several arts organizations and other artforms such as poetry and dance, and has strived to work towards equity in the diverse compositional voices represented.
