The studio has mostly written and designed together in and about the periphery, with very little means and a particular interest in the intersection of architecture, economy, ecology, and politics.
João is a researcher at the Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies at the University of Porto, where he develops his doctoral research as a grantee of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
Both as researchers and practitioners, their work has previously been presented at FAUP, the Architecture Department of the University of Évora, the Philosophy Institute of NOVA University in Lisbon, the Architecture Department of the Lisbon University Institute, CIIVA, or Casa da Arquitectura.
In April 2023, their first built work (Studio House) was awarded an honorable mention in the first edition of the MGD Award, organized by the Portuguese Association of Architects. In 2024, House in Ancede was awarded the Forma Prize for Emerging Practices and subsequently nominated as finalist for the Iberian awards Arquia/Próxima. In 2025, atelier local was shortlisted for the international Début Prize, of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
In 2023, their first works were published in the monographic issue of AMAG PT #04. In 2024, they co-edited with fala atelier “Ceci n’est pas un portrait.” In the same year, they published “atelier local : after five years of living” (Exemplo Books).
As an event, atelier local is the result of all who participate in each and every project.
The talk will focus on the first five years of practice, departing from our built work to reflect upon the legitimacy and social relevance that architecture holds today.
This event is part of the Autumn 2025 Baumer Lecture Series.
The Baumer Lecture Series invites prominent researchers and practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning to present their work and to engage subjects both topical and enduring.
