Cúre and Penabad's designs reflect the diverse cultural influences of Colombia, where Cúre was born; Cuba, where Penabad’s ancestors are from; and the United States, where they both studied at the University of Miami School of Architecture and Harvard Graduate School of Design.

The firm has received numerous awards including over 30 American Institute of Architects awards and state and local preservation awards. They were also finalists for the distinguished Marcus Prize and recipients of the prestigious Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York, recognizing their unique design voice and significant body of work.

In addition to their design practice, Cúre and Penabad are active in academia, teaching at the University of Miami School of Architecture. They have also held teaching positions at Northeastern University, the Boston Architectural Center, and Yale University, where they served as William Henry Bishop Visiting Professors and Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professors of Architectural Design. Their publications include Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect (University of Georgia Press, 2010), Call to Order: Sustaining Simplicity in Architecture (ORO Publishers, 2018), and the upcoming Made in Miami/Hecho en Miami (ACTAR Publishers, 2024). Penabad also hosts the international radio show ON CITIES, broadcast through the Voice America network and available on all podcast platforms.

The Baumer Series invites prominent researchers and practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning to present their work and to engage subjects both topical and enduring.
