College of the Arts Initiatives and Funding Priorities

The Advancement of World-Class Facilities
With roots dating back to the 1870s, the College of the Arts includes art, art education, dance, design, history of art, music, theatre and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). Many units are highly ranked in their respective fields with several programs ranked in the nation’s top 10. Dance and Art Education are ranked number one in their respective fields nationally. Design and Art have programs ranked among the top 10 nationwide. And the School of Music is ranked 11th in public institutions and 24th overall.

A vital component of maintaining our reputation as one of the finest higher education institutions in the arts is having world-class facilities that allow us to offer innovative learning experiences for students. Outstanding learning environments are vital to attracting creative students, talented faculty and top professionals.

The college seeks to advance several new building projects, with a new state-of-the-art School of Music facility being our top priority.

The Creation of Endowed Chairs
In the College of the Arts, endowed chairs aim to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture by advancing strong connections between the university and professional communities.  The chairs will be awarded to outstanding artists, arts administrators or scholars recruited from inside and outside the university. In addition to teaching and mentoring students, the chairs will be responsible for expanding opportunities for students to link to professional fields related to their courses of study. They also will offer advice to units about programs and courses of study to help ensure our educational opportunities excel in preparing students for the rapidly changing professional world.

Graduate Fellowships
To recruit and support our graduate students, eight fellowships will be created in each of the college’s eight units. These fellowships will allow us to recruit talented graduate students, who will be selected based on their academic excellence and professional experience.  Their career experiences will enrich the educational environment.

Research and Travel
A fund will be created to support faculty and student research and travel.  Providing financial resources for innovative research, creative projects and travel, this fund will allow for extensive communication of outstanding work, and provide international visibility and experiences for Ohio State faculty and students.

The Creation of the Dean’s Innovation Fund
This discretionary fund will be used to encourage faculty, staff and students to capitalize on emerging trends, opportunities, and priorities in the various fields. Through scholarships, fellowships and grants we will be able to provide opportunities beyond the standard curriculum to help students learn how to take charge of their arts careers. Examples include:

  • Support of student projects and productions in galleries including the Lazarus space as well as concert halls outside the university
  • Seminars and workshops focusing on management skills
  • New ideas generated by students and faculty that allow for practical experiences of managing and producing creative and scholarly work.

The fund offers the flexibility to quickly initiate and sustain excellence, innovation, and relevance through the college’s programs and courses of study.
