| Drums Downtown III: For the third year in a row, the high energy Drums Downtown returns to the stage of the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theatre in downtown Columbus, where the popular show has been expanded to two nights. After a sold-out performance last winter, Drums Downtown III will be presented this year at 8 pm Friday, Feb 24 and Saturday, Feb 25, according to organizer Susan Powell, assistant professor in the School of Music. The eclectic show is a collaboration between the School of Music and Department of Dance, and features the OSU Percussion Ensemble, student musicians and dancers in a production that merges the beat of percussive sounds, original choreography and engaging movement. Susan Hadley, dance faculty member, will present new choreography on two pieces. The Department of Theatre will also be involved. Specific pieces include the hip-hop inspired marimba quartet Hook by Graham Fitkin; Suite by Lou Harrison; Stonewave by Rolf Wallin, with choreography by Susan Hadley; and Kalabash by Nigel Westlake, with choreography by Susan Hadley. Also on the program are Remembrance by Robin Engelman, for percussion quintet and brass; Mitos Brasileiros (Brazilian Myths) by Ney Rosauro; and the debut of the OSU Fife/Drum Ensemble performing, in full costume, traditional drum beatings and melodies from the Colonial Era. The Shiraz Trio (Joseph Krygier, Scott Herring, Susan Powell) will also make an appearance, performing the James Bond-inspired Shaken Not Stirred by Michael Daugherty and Musicique de Table for three percussionists playing amplified tables.
