| Jazz Festival Heats Up Campus Thu Apr 3 – Sun Apr 6 The ever-popular OSU Jazz Festival heats up the stage Thursday, April 3 – Sunday, April 6 on campus, and includes concerts along with college and high school jazz days. The 31st annual event spotlights the OSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Ensemble, and welcomes renowned guests saxophonist Eddie Bayard and jazz organist Tony Monaco. Bayard, an OSU jazz alumnus, is originally from Jamaica. The gifted reedman who’s been playing for more than a decade has been called “a guttural, virtuosic volcano of a tenor player.” Bayard’s quartet will be spotlighted in a concert on Saturday evening, when he presents a tribute to jazz great Ornette Coleman, whose unorthodox style and artistic vision were the bases of the new “free jazz” movement in the 1950s. Monaco—who presents a concert on Thursday evening—is a Columbus-based jazz performer best known for his skill on the Hammond B-3 organ. After releasing five successful CDs, Monaco toured extensively, including a 10-day tour of Australia. His newest CD, East to West, was recorded on his newly formed Chicken Coup Records.
