OSU Department of Dance Stages 'Dance Downtown Rocks!' NYC Guitarist Vernon Reid to Perform Live with his Band The Ohio State University Department of Dance brings Dance Downtown to the Riffe Center's Capitol Theatre Thursday, May 3–Saturday, May 5 at 8 pm. This year's performance welcomes acclaimed New York City guitarist and composer Vernon Reid. The program will spotlight The Vernon Reid Project and Trisha Brown's Set and Reset/Reset, a variation of her original choreography, Set and Reset with original music by Laurie Anderson. The Vernon Reid Project is rock and roll, vibrant and energetic; it's up-close and live, with dancers and musicians giving a powerful performance on stage. The piece uses Reid's music for new choreography by faculty and guest artists, with his New York band Masque performing live. The choreographers are Bebe Miller, faculty member at OSU; Kathleen Hermesdorf, San Francisco choreographer and a member of Miller's New York dance company; Nicole Stanton, faculty member at OSU; and Ming-Lung Yang, visiting faculty member from Taiwan. A cast of 27 dancers works as one ensemble for the hour-long piece. Set and Reset/Reset, a project of the Trisha Brown Company, lets dancers borrow Brown's movement vocabulary and choreographic concepts to derive a unique version of her original piece. Former Brown company member Abigail Yager directs the project with 11 dancers. The new piece uses Laurie Anderson's original score and a re-visioning of the concepts for sets and costumes, by a design team that includes Jeff Haase, OSU Department of Design, and Dave Covey and Nadine Spray, Department of Dance. For details about the program, call the Department of Dance at (614) 292-7977.
