OSU's Urban Arts Space Opens its DoorsGrand Opening Reception: The Ohio State University College of the Arts is “thrilled” to be creating a solid presence smack-dab in the middle of downtown Columbus. That’s how Karen Bell, dean of the college, describes the general excitement surrounding the opening of its Urban Arts Space in the former Lazarus building at the corner of Town and High Streets. “The doors officially open in early February for this incredible space, which will provide many, many opportunities for our students and faculty to exhibit art and present performances to new audiences in the heart of the city,” Bell says. “The Urban Arts Space is a professional launching pad for the students, helping to bridge the gap between their academic and professional careers.” The space itself is comprised of nearly 10,000 square feet of exhibition/performance space on the ground floor of the former department store. The College has worked closely with the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and the City of Columbus to realize the enterprise. The totally renovated building also now houses the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Jobs and Family Services, with more tenants moving in soon. “We’re certain that the space will be fully utilized by students
and faculty from all areas of our visual and performing arts,” Bell explains. “Much of the programming
will be in their hands; they will select solo and group exhibitions, interdisciplinary
projects, screenings and performances for the space.” She says the building
also will provide the college with the valuable opportunity for increased outreach
into the Columbus community, with lunch-time lectures, school projects and
collaborations with professional arts organizations in the city. Kelly Stevelt Kaser has been named manager of the Urban Arts Space, located at 50 West Town St. For information about the space, call her at (614) 292-8861. |
