The College of the Arts opens the doors of the new
OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St in the historic Lazarus building, downtown
Columbus. The 10,000 square feet of exhibition and alternative performance
space in the heart of the city has been a long-time dream of the college
and the university, and will serve as a “professional launching pad” for
students, according to Dean Karen Bell.
The OSU Urban Arts Space has scheduled a grand opening Friday,
Feb 8, from 5:30 to 8 pm to celebrate the space and its inaugural exhibitions.
All are welcome to the grand opening; simply call (614) 292-8861 to RSVP. The
festivities will include remarks from Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, OSU President
Gordon Gee and Dean Bell. Informal tours will be offered, and the evening will
include live music from OSU percussion students, costumed stilt walkers and
refreshments.
Exhibitions include Midnight Robbers:
The Artists of Notting Hill Carnival,
a look at the incredible artistry of the London Carnival, co-curated by Lesley
Ferris, OSU Theatre, and Ruth Tompsett of London. It runs Feb 4 to April 4.
A second exhibition, Linking the Past
to the Future, takes a look at the beloved
Lazarus store and its historic building through the years. It will be on view
Feb 5 to March 7.
Kelly Stevelt Kaser has been named manager of the OSU Urban
Arts Space, (614) 292-8861. Prudence Gill serves as chief curator. Hours are
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 am to 2 pm; Thursday 4 to 8 pm; and

by appointment.
