Arts Scholars to Study Mayan Culture in Mexico

A group of OSU Arts Scholars is heading to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula over spring break—but not for your typical fun in the sun, college-style. Instead, the short-term study abroad program will immerse the students in the study of Mayan culture and artistic expression, and will help promote an understanding of creative expression as an international activity. The students—including 14 Arts Scholars and three other students from the College of the Arts—are preparing for the trip this quarter by taking the class, Interdisciplinary Arts Convergence. The class is taught by art professor Malcolm Cochran. He and Arts Scholars coordinator Connie De Jong will accompany the group to Merida, Mexico.

Arts Scholars are high-achieving undergraduate students who share an interest in the arts, though they are not required to be majoring in the arts. The students embarking on the trip, in fact, include students in art, music, dance and design as well as engineering and biology.

This trip will completely change the students' perspective of who they are as creative people, explains De Jong. "By immersing them in daily cultural activities in this strong Mayan community, it will help students identify culture in a way we could not teach from the classroom."
