Contemporary Music Festival
2005

Music of African-American composers

The Ohio State University School of Music, in collaboration with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, will honor the music of African-American composers during the Contemporary Music Festival 2005, with concerts scheduled on the Ohio State campus and in downtown Columbus Jan 26 to 30. Guest composer for the festival is Olly Wilson, a California-based composer widely known for his works of orchestral music.
“Olly Wilson is perhaps the dean of living African-American composers,” explains Don Harris, professor in the School of Music and organizer of the festival. “His richly varied musical background includes not only traditional compositions in virtually every genre, his professional experience as a jazz and orchestral musician, his work in electronic media and studies of African music in West Africa make him truly representative of present-day thought in African-American music.”

Harris continues, ”This year’s Contemporary Music Festival accords him its place of honor. But the festival also honors African-American composers in general.” Along with several works of Wilson, the festival programs will include compositions by other prominent African-American composers, including Adolphus Hailstork, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Jeffrey Mumford and Alvin Singleton.

The four-day festival includes a Wednesday concert at Ohio State featuring OSU faculty, student and alumni composers, and a Thursday concert at Ohio State featuring the chamber music of Olly Wilson. Friday and Saturday concerts will be downtown at the Ohio Theatre featuring the Columbus Symphony Orchestra playing Wilson’s Episodes for Orchestra, with guest conductor Daniel Hege. And on Sunday, a concert at Ohio State presents music of several African-American composers and features the Ritz Chamber Players with Terrance Patterson, artistic director.

This is the third time the OSU School of Music and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra have partnered to present a Contemporary Music Festival. Past Ohio State festivals have honored composers John Corigliano, Lou Harrison, Krzysztof Penderecki and Lukas Foss.
