Art & Tech Student
Flies above South Oval

Art & Technology student Anthony Castronovo has been dreaming of flying since he can remember. After thousands of hours of research, materials testing and seeking university approvals, Castronovo finally got to realize his dream, by experiencing the South Oval from a bird’s eye view.

His project, Lift 2006, consists of a large helium balloon – designed and hand-constructed by Castronovo from strong, synthetic fabric -- which can suspend passengers from a harness, allowing them to experience flight. With Ohio as a birthplace of flight, Castronovo’s work serves as a direct, interactive experience for individuals. (See www.floatup.blogspot.com for updates about Lift 2006.)

Castronovo’s impressive silver balloon soared above the South Oval from 7 am to 7 pm Wednesday, May 24. A candidate for an MFA degree in the Department of Art at Ohio State, Castronovo teaches a class in new media robotics in Art & Technology. An early interest in engineering and a love for ecology and natural systems have been a source of inspiration and a re-occurring subject as he explores the connection between art and science in his artistic practice.
