| Susan Van Pelt Petry named Chair, Department of Dance, at Ohio State According to an announcement from Karen Bell, dean, College of the Arts at The Ohio State University, Susan Van Pelt Petry has been named full professor and chair of the Department of Dance. The appointment was approved by the university’s Board of Trustees in September; it was effective July 1. “Susan Petry is a gifted performer and savvy administrator. I am delighted that she is chair of our acclaimed Department of Dance,” says Dean Bell. “Susan’s outstanding artistic and administrative experiences will serve the department well as she works with faculty, staff and students to continue the tradition of cutting-edge dance performance and scholarship at Ohio State.” Says Petry, “The department has a dynamic history as a leader in dance in higher education, with a roster of outstanding faculty and a network of engaged students and alumni. I am honored to be working with these individuals, and with all the collaborators that interface with our department such as ACCAD, the Wexner Center, the Columbus arts community, and our international partners and artists.” Petry has a long history with the College of the Arts, starting as a visiting artist and then an assistant professor in dance in the early 1980s. She returned to Ohio State as a visiting associate professor in 2001 and was named assistant dean for the college two years ago. Most recently, she was interim chair in the Department of Dance. She also was associate professor of dance at Ohio University for four years and the artistic director of Van Pelt Dance Ensemble for nine years. She has been a teacher, visiting artist and rehearsal director for universities and professional companies throughout the US and internationally. Petry teaches modern technique, yoga, composition, anatomy, history and pedagogy. She has choreographed more than 30 works for Van Pelt Dance Ensemble, and has created numerous works for other professional companies and student groups. Her most recent works are Again and On Foot I Had to Cross the Solar System. She has performed in the US, Taiwan and Australia, and is the recipient of seven Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships, and a Greater Columbus Arts Council Fellowship. She also has served as president of the OhioDance board of trustees and is a panel member of the Community Arts Fund for the Columbus Foundation.
