Robert Sorton is Professor of Oboe at The Ohio State University, where he founded OBOHIO, The Double Reed Consort. After graduating from the North Carolina School of the Arts, he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, summa cum laude, from the Cleveland Institute of Music. For fourteen years, he was Assistant Principal Oboe of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Miami Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony and the Columbus Symphony. Currently, Mr. Sorton holds the Principal Oboe Chair of the Roanoke Symphony. From 1993-1999, he was Principal and Solo Oboe of the Eastern Music Festival, where he also taught oboe and coached chamber music. Since 2000, he has served as Principal and Solo Oboe of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, where he also teaches and coaches. Mr. Sorton teaches oboe and coaches chamber music at the Roanoke Youth Symphony Summer Institute. With OBOHIO, he has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands. In 2003, OBOHIO performed for the Joint Staff in Washington, DC. As a member of the Winds of Wintergreen (WOW), he performed and taught in a variety of venues in South Africa. He has also participated in the Casals Festival (Puerto Rico), the Siena Music Festival (Italy) and the Meadowbrook Festival (Michigan). He has taught at Miami International University, Oakland University and Wayne State University. He has received the OSU School of Music Distinguished Teaching Award and has been listed in Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in Entertainment. He has recorded with OBOHIO, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (London Decca) and the Roanoke Symphony (Delos).
