James Akins is professor of euphonium and tuba, and has been principal
tuba of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra since 1981. He is also a clinician/consultant
for the Tuba Exchange in Durham, North Carolina, and a clinician for the
Willson Instrument Company in Flums, Switzerland. Professor Akins has
designed several tubas for the Kalison Tuba Company of Milan, Italy. As
a clinician for these companies, Professor Akins has given master classes
and recitals for high schools and colleges throughout the country. He
studied with Ronald Bishop, Cleveland Orchestra; Arnold Jacobs, Chicago
Symphony Orchestra; Robert Ryker, Montreal Symphony; Fredrick Schaufele,
Lakewood High School; and Robert LeBlanc, professor emeritus at The Ohio
State University.
