Transfer Credit information

If you came to Ohio State with transfer credit, have it reviewed and applied as soon as possible by an Arts Advisor in 050 Denney Hall. The counselors will also advise you as to which courses you must discuss with the individual departments. If you have credit that you think may count on your major, you must see the major adviser to have it evaluated.

If you are planning to take classes at other institutions while you are an Ohio State student, you need to have the credit evaluated prior to taking the courses in order to have them applied to your major or you may check how it will transfer by going to www.transfer.org for GEC credit. When you transfer classes, you only receive the credit hours; the grades you received at the other institution do not transfer to affect your OSU CPHR. However, in order for the credit to be applied you must receive a C- or better at the other institution. If you attend a school on the semester system, OSU will multiply those credit hours by 1.5 to correlate with the quarter system. OSU will not award 4.5 or 5.5 credit hours for a course; you can only receive credit in whole numbers (4 or 5). To balance the decimals, OSU will round up and down on alternating courses. For example, the first and third courses will be worth 5 credit hours and the second and fourth courses will be worth 4 credit hours.

Transfer credit may be accepted at OSU a few different ways. If the course is a direct match (all of the same topics [no more, no less] are covered), then you will get credit for the OSU equivalent. (For example, English 235 at Columbus State Community College (CSCC) equals English 260 at Ohio State. Thus, your transcript will read English 260 for 5K. The course is worth five credit hours at CSCC and transfer credit comes in as "K" credit.)
Course equivalents between Columbus State and OSU

Instead of being a direct equivalency, credit can also be evaluated as special (SPL), general (GEN), technical (TECH), or deferred (DEF). Special credit counts towards graduation, but OSU does not offer a specific equivalent course. Special credit may or may not count for a particular college requirement. General credit is awarded when a specific course equivalency is possible but could not be readily determined by the Admissions Office. The degree-granting unit (ART) will determine the applicability of special or general credit towards degree requirements. Only 12 hours of technical credit can be counted toward an Arts degree. Deferred credit designates course work for which you have not yet been awarded transfer credit. For a determination about whether credit will be awarded for the course, you should see the transfer credit evaluator in the appropriate department at OSU. Any materials and information you can provide about the course will help the evaluator in making that decision. At the very least however you should bring a transcript and course offerings bulletin from your previous university. Additional documentation such as syllabus, projects, written samples, or other work specific to the courses in question is also helpful and can be used to in your favor to assign appropriate credit.

Ohio State will need to receive official transcripts in order to post transfer credit. These need to be sent to OSU's Admissions Office, not to your college (ART) office. This credit will take a few weeks to be posted to your record.
