Welcome from the Dean

Warm up winter...

...with an arts event on campus! Virtually every day at Ohio State, you can find art, dance, theatre and music events to suit just about everyone’s taste. If you’ve ever visited, you know that many of our College of the Arts facilities make up the cultural “heart” of the Ohio State campus, situated together on the east end of the historic Oval. And right in our midst is another arts powerhouse—the Wexner Center for the Arts.

We at the College of the Arts are proud of our relationship with the Wexner Center, which opened in 1989 as a research laboratory for the performing and visual arts. The College and the Wexner Center work hand in hand in many ways, from co-presenting visiting artists to utilizing art students as leaders for educational activities.

For example, last quarter art professor Michael Mercil began a two-year public art project called The Beanfield in partnership with the Wexner Center, and is scheduled to conduct a gallery talk about it this spring. The center hosts an ongoing series of talks by art faculty members, such as Steven Thurston, Suzanne Silver and Ken Rinaldo. Other faculty from Art Education conduct teacher workshops at the Wexner - Sidney Walker and Jim Sanders will be doing so in March. Also in March, our Theatre folks and the Wexner present a talk by Margo Jefferson, from the New York Times. Visiting artists regularly offer master classes in dance for OSU students.

In the summer, our art students are put to work as “teaching artists” in Wexner programs for children—roughly 20 programs each summer are staffed by OSU students. And we are proud to say that some of the qualified staffers at the Wexner Center are in fact our alums—including Shelly Casto (Art Education), Jerry Dannemiller (Design) and Betsy Pandora (Theatre).

Partnering with the Wexner Center offers our students, faculty and university community unparalleled opportunities to view and experience cutting edge artists and their work. We are grateful that such a forward thinking arts institution is part of the cultural fabric of this university.

We hope to see you on campus soon!
